Fiosrú the Office of the Police Ombudsman is the statutory body which deals with complaints from members of the public about the Gardaí. Fiosrú is a new body with enhanced powers that will continue the work of the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission (GSOC). All staff and records in GSOC have been transferred to Fiosrú to make sure you receive the same service.
I submitted a complaint to GSOC before 2 April 2024. What happens to my complaint?
During the initial stage of a complaint, it has to be reviewed to see if the complaint meets certain criteria as set out in law. If a complaint meets the relevant criteria then it is considered to be "admissible".
In that regard, if a complaint which was considered admissible by GSOC, then that complaint will continue to be investigated by Fiosrú in accordance with the provisions of the Garda Síochána Act, 2005.
If a complaint was made to GSOC, but an admissibility decision was made by Fiosrú, then that complaint will be investigated by Fiosrú in accordance with the provisions of the Policing, Security and Community Safety Act, 2024.
If a complaint was made on or after the commencement of Fiosrú, then that complaint will be investigated by Fiosrú in accordance with the provisions of the Policing, Security and Community Safety Act, 2024.
Do I need to resubmit my complaint to Fiosrú?
No action is required by you, and you do not have to resubmit your complaint or submit a new complaint to Fiosrú. We will write to you to update and advise of the next steps.
Will I continue to receive information from GSOC about my complaint?
From this point on, all correspondence relating to your complaint will be from Fiosrú and will bear the logo and branding as you can see on this site.
